HAIR CONCERN

Diffuse thinning: what does an all-over change mean?

Diffuse thinning means the hair looks less dense across a wider area rather than only at one small spot. Increased shedding can create a diffuse appearance, and other forms of hair loss can also look widespread. The pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Topic: Hair Thinning

Overview

What diffuse means — Diffuse describes the distribution of the visible change. It does not name a disease or tell you whether the main issue is shedding, reduced growth, breakage or more than one process.

Look at the timeline — A sudden increase after a major stressor raises different questions than slow progressive thinning over months or years.

When to seek evaluation — Persistent diffuse thinning, especially when accompanied by marked shedding, scalp symptoms or other health changes, is worth discussing with a dermatologist.
