Rice Water for Hair Growth: Does It Work?

Rice water is a traditional hair rinse that may make hair feel smoother, but there is no clinical evidence that it makes hair grow. Here is what it can and cannot do and how to use it safely.

Rice water is a kitchen rinse. Its reputation comes from tradition rather than hair-growth trials.

Short answer: there is no clinical evidence that rice water makes hair grow. We did not find any published human trial that tested rice water for hair growth or hair loss. Used as an occasional rinse, it may make hair feel smoother. Used too often or left on too long, the starch can leave hair stiff, dry or dull, and homemade fermented mixtures are not standardized. If your hair is thinning, rice water will not address the cause.

What rice water is

Rice water is the cloudy liquid left after soaking or boiling rice. Some people use it straight away; others leave it to ferment for a day or two before using it as a rinse. It contains starch along with small amounts of other compounds from the grain.

It has a long tradition as a hair rinse in parts of East Asia, and it became a viral hair-growth trend on social media.

What the evidence shows

Most claims about rice water trace back to tradition, personal before-and-after photos and laboratory work on rice-derived ingredients, not to trials of rice water on people’s hair. A laboratory finding about an extract does not show what a kitchen rinse does, and none of it shows new hair growing from the scalp.

Viral claims that rice water makes hair grow several inches in weeks are not supported by any study we could find. Hair grows slowly, and visible length changes over weeks are more likely to reflect less breakage, different styling or different photos.

What it might do

Starch can coat the hair surface. Some people find that makes hair feel smoother, easier to detangle or slightly fuller. If rice water reduces tangling and breakage for you, the lengths may look healthier over time, but that is about keeping the hair you have rather than growing more. Tips for healthy hair

Downsides and who should be careful

  • Stiff or dry hair. Frequent use or leaving it on for a long time can leave a coating that makes hair feel rough or brittle.
  • Buildup on the scalp. Residue can make fine hair look flat if not rinsed well.
  • Fermented mixtures. Homemade ferments are not standardized. Discard any batch that smells off and do not keep it at room temperature for long.
  • Sensitive or flaky scalp. Stop if your scalp itches or stings, and treat dandruff with a product designed for it.

How to try it safely

  1. Rinse rice first, then soak a small amount in clean water for about 30 minutes and strain it.
  2. Use it after shampooing as a rinse, leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse it out completely with plain water.
  3. Follow with conditioner on the lengths if your hair feels stiff.
  4. Try it once a week at most, and stop if your hair feels dry or your scalp is irritated.

If your hair is actually thinning

If you are seeing more scalp, a wider part or more shedding, the cause matters more than any rinse. Shedding after illness or stress, low iron, thyroid problems and pattern hair loss each need a different response. Causes of hair loss Can hair grow back? · Hair loss treatment options

Quick answers

How long does rice water take to grow hair?

There is no evidence that it grows hair, so there is no timeline to expect. Any change you notice is more likely to be in how hair feels or how much it breaks.

Is fermented rice water better than regular rice water?

We did not find trials comparing them for hair. Fermented mixtures are less predictable at home, so if you try it, keep batches small and discard any that smell off.

Can you leave rice water in your hair overnight?

It is better not to. Leaving starch on the hair for hours can make it stiff and dry. A few minutes as a rinse, followed by plain water, is enough.

Is rice water good for low porosity or fine hair?

Fine hair can be weighed down or stiffened by the coating, and some people with dry hair find it makes hair feel rough. Try it occasionally and stop if your hair feels worse.
